St. Thomas outlasts Chatham, 5-3

Joe Thornton RC    Thu, Jan 03, 2013

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the St. Thomas Stars escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Chatham Maroons.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Matt Simsons' goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

St. Thomas was led by Simsons, who had one goal and one assist. Simsons scored on the power play 18:34 into the third period to make the score 4-3 St. Thomas. The Stars had gotten the advantage when Chatham's Jake Flegel was sent off for fighting. Colin Mooney picked up the assist.

The Maroons were unable to stop St. Thomas from sending pucks towards the net, and the Stars eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. St. Thomas' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to Chatham's power play unit.

Chatham was helped by Eric Palazzolo, who finished with one goal. Palazzolo scored on the power play 12:36 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Ashton Waters had put the Maroons on the power play. Sean Myers assisted on the tally. In addition, Chatham received assists from Morris Branden, Michael Verboom, and Alexander Morgan, who each chipped in one.
