Niagara Falls rides Johnson to victory over Welland, 3-1

The Niagara Falls Canucks relied on the sparkling performance of Hunter Johnson in net to grab a 3-1 win against the Welland Jr. Canadians.

Welland's power play was ineffective against Niagara Falls' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Canucks were sparked by Cole Vinnai, who had one goal. Vinnai scored 4:53 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Niagara Falls. Drew Berkel provided the assist.

Niagara Falls' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Welland power plays. The Canucks forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Chris McDougall to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. Niagara Falls could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Niagara Falls also got points from Berkel, who also registered one goal and one assist. Niagara Falls also got a goal from Cam Stewart as well. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Tory McLean, Johnny Curran, and Darren Young, who each chipped in one.

Welland stifled the Canucks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians' offense operated below they season average. Welland puts an average of 3.7 pucks into the net per game. The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 37 shots on Niagara Falls' net.

Welland was led by Riley Brooks, who scored the team's only goal. Brooks scored 5:36 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Niagara Falls. Chris Brown assisted on the tally.

Johnson recorded 36 saves for the Canucks. Niagara Falls registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. For the Canucks, Vito Scaringi was ejected from the game. Chris McDougall made 33 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 35 shots. Welland incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Derrik Vannas was ejected from the game.
