Welland blows out Buffalo, 5-1

The Welland Jr. Canadians were firing on all cylinders against the Buffalo Jr. Blades, and when the final buzzer sounded Jr. Canadians emerged with a 5-1 win.

Welland's Chris McDougall was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 25 saves and let only one puck past him. McDougall certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.26 entering the contest.

The Jr. Canadians were sparked by Aaron Beally, who tallied one goal. Beally scored 13:22 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Welland. Ryan Migliaccio provided the assist.

Welland put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Buffalo to score on any of its four power plays. The Jr. Canadians forced the Jr. Blades goalie Ian Shorthouse to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Others who scored for Welland included Drake Lynds, who had two and Jason Lacroix and Adam Barron, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Braden Curry, who had three and Adam Mataya, Brooker Muir, Chris Brown, Gabe Ruggi, and Matthew Mateljan, who contributed one a piece.

Buffalo managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Jr. Blades finished below its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game.

Buffalo was led by Tom Hanna, who scored the team's only goal. Hanna scored 15 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Nick Berst assisted on the tally.

Welland incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. For the Jr. Canadians, Muir was ejected from the game. The Jr. Blades' Shorthouse stopped 40 shots out of the 45 that he faced.
