Sarnia survives Chatham comeback, wins 6-5

The Chatham Maroons tried their best to erase a four-goal deficit, but the Sarnia Legionnaires would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-5.

Sarnia made the score 5-1 on a goal by Hunter Tyczynski at 7:02 in the second period, and Chatham got as close as 5-4 when Brayden Hopkins scored 2:25 into the third period.

In the losing effort, the Maroons were paced by Trevor Richardson, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Richardson scored the first of his two goals at 13:59 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Sarnia. Michael Verboom picked up the assist. Richardson's next tally made the score 5-5 with 17:24 left in the third period. Verboom provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:42 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Legionnaires excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Sarnia bested its season scoring average. This season, the Legionnaires average 3.6 goals per contest. The defensemen of Sarnia were also effective in Chatham's zone, and came away with two goals.

The Legionnaires were helped by Jason Teschke, who had one goal and one assist. Teschke scored 18:29 into the third period to make the score 6-5 Sarnia. Matt Cimetta picked up the assist. Sarnia additionally got points from Cimetta, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Bobby King, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Jeff King also scored for Sarnia. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Frank White (APJ) and Davis Boyer, who each chipped in one and Josh Kestner, Tyler Prong, and Thomas Moxley, who contributed two a piece.

The Maroons' offense rang up 43 shots on Sarnia's net.

Chatham also got points from Hopkins, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Verboom, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Chatham also got a goal from Steven Szekesy as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Nate Pietens, who had two.

Sean Parker recorded 38 saves for the Legionnaires. Sarnia totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. For the Legionnaires, King was ejected from the game. Darien Ekblad made eight saves before being replaced by Scott Tricker, who took the loss and made 15 saves. Chatham ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. The Maroons ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jake Flegel was ejected from the game.
