Huge game by Bottigoni boosts Cambridge over Elmira, 6-3

Alex Bottigoni had one goal and two assists to lead the Cambridge Winter Hawks to a 6-3 victory over the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Bottigoni beat Hayden Neuman with a shot 5:43 into the first period on the power play to make the score 1-0 Cambridge. Cambridge had taken the advantage when Elmira's Justin Cooke got sent off for high sticking. Christian Barnard provided the assist. Bottigoni dished an assist on Andrew Coupland's goal that made the score 2-0 Cambridge at 13:16 into the first period. He added another helper on Brennon Pearce's goal that made the score 4-0 Cambridge at 15:56 into the first period.

The Winter Hawks pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 45 penalty minutes.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:24 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Cambridge surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Winter Hawks have scored at the pace of 3.6 goals per game during the current campaign.

Cambridge also got points from Cody Gratton, who also had one goal and one assist, Barnard, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Pearce, who also registered one goal and two assists. Hudson Michaelis also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Maxime Lamontagne and Anthony Guido, who each chipped in one.

The Sugar Kings were often in penalty trouble, totaling five minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Elmira had been spending in the box. The Sugar Kings were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to one goal off of 10 man advantages.

Elmira was helped by Jake Weidner, who tallied one goal and two assists. Weidner scored 16:18 into the second period to make the score 6-3 Cambridge. Brandon Stewart picked up the assist. Elmira additionally got points from Brady Campbell, who also had one goal and two assists and Stewart, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Craig Johnson, who had one.

Lucas Machalski recorded 25 saves for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For Cambridge, Cameron Pentsa and Pearce were ejected from the contest. Hayden Neuman took the loss and made seven saves before being replaced by Mackenzie Blackwood who made 13 saves. Team's Brodie Whitehead and Matt Harding were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
