St. Thomas survives penalties, beats St. Marys, 5-2

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the St. Thomas Stars were able to defeat the St. Marys Lincolns, 5-2.

St. Thomas was led by Kevin Zacharuk, who grabbed one goal. Zacharuk scored on the power play 12:43 into the second period to make the score 3-1 St. Thomas. A holding penalty on Marcus Gverzdys had put the Stars on the power play. Scott Mitchell picked up the assist.

St. Thomas excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances.

St. Thomas also had goals scored by Colin Mooney, who had two and Martin Kudla and Chris Maton, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Mike Iacocca and Trevor Abbott, who contributed one a piece and Ian MacDonald and Braden Hellems, who each chipped in two.

St. Marys was helped by Mitch Smith, who had one goal. Smith scored 18:27 into the third period to make the score 4-2 St. Thomas. Chandler Allen assisted on the tally. St. Marys also got a goal from Owen MacDonald as well. More assists for St. Marys came via Tyler Bryson, Cody Filson, and Reid Oliver, who contributed one a piece.

The Stars' Donald Edwards stopped 28 shots out of the 30 that he faced. St. Thomas incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Craig Wood made 20 saves for the Lincolns on 24 shots. St. Marys incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
