Thorold beats St. Catharines 5-4 after comeback scare

The St. Catharines Falcons tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Thorold Blackhawks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

A goal by Adrian Copeland put Thorold up 5-3 in the third period, but St. Catharines pulled to within one on Mitch Bennett's tally 13:05 into the third period.

In a losing effort, the Falcons were paced by Bennett, who racked up two goals and one assist. Bennett scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:37 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Thorold. Julian Luciani picked up the assist. Bennett's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Thorold with 6:55 left in the third period. Ben Walsh provided the assist.

The Blackhawks avoided man-down situations well, finishing with one major for 15 minutes in penalty time. Thorold ended up below its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blackhawks' offense rang up 34 shots on St. Catharines' net.

Thorold also got a goal from Brian Fonseca as well. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Brian Brosnan, Matt Pizzo, Joel Forestell, Tanner Hildbrant, Ed Creighton, Myles Falasca, Vince Dunn, Joe DiBiasi, and Dan Chudobiak, who each chipped in one.

The Falcons could not produce up to they normal offensive output. St. Catharines averages 6.1 goals per game. The Falcons kept Thorold's goalie busy throughout the game, and Vinny Merante made 38 saves on 42 shots.

St. Catharines additionally got points from Luke Karaim, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jimmy Sheehan also scored for St. Catharines. More assists for St. Catharines came via Kyle Woodhouse and Jesse Miller, who contributed one a piece.

The Blackhawks registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Hoszko was ejected from the game. Stormer Santana made 29 saves for St. Catharines on 34 shots. The Falcons incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
