Flegel leads Chatham over Lambton Shores, 6-1

The Chatham Maroons' Jake Flegel had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing one assist in his team's 6-1 win over the Lambton Shores Predators.

Flegel's tallies came on the power play at 16:46 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Chatham and 12:36 into the second to make the score 3-1 Chatham.

Lambton Shores was stymied by Chatham netminder Darien Ekblad, who stopped 32 shots during the victory. Ekblad certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.93 entering the contest.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 10:29 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Maroons made Predators' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 38 shots and forcing 32 saves. Justin Tugwell made 18 stops and Brandon Campbell made 14. Chatham got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Chatham also got points from Steven Szekesy, who also had one goal and one assist. Brayden Hopkins also scored for Chatham. More assists for Chatham came via Thomas Eady, who had two and Trevor Richardson, Nate Pietens, Connor Doran, Michael Verboom, Steven Beenackers, and Brennan Feasey, who each chipped in one.

The the Predators penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Lambton Shores had been spending in the box. The Predators were held below their usual level of production. Lambton Shores averages 3.3 goals per game. The Maroons were unable to stop the Predators from sending pucks towards the net, and Lambton Shores eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

The Predators were led by Cale Duberry, who scored the team's only goal. Duberry scored on the power play 16:11 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A hooking penalty on Morris Branden had put Lambton Shores on the power play. Kyler Keating picked up the assist.

Chatham totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 2-for-4 on the power play. For the Maroons, Eric Palazzolo was ejected from the game. The Predators registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Lambton Shores ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Lencz was ejected from the game.
