Elmira beats Cambridge 4-3 as Campbell gets hat trick

Brady Campbell netted a hat trick to lead the Elmira Sugar Kings over the Cambridge Winter Hawks, 4-3.

Campbell notched his first tally 1:44 into the first period. He then added goals at 2:35 into the second and at 14:39 into the third.

Elmira pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 48 penalty minutes.

The Sugar Kings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Elmira forced Cambridge goalie Lee Doherty to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

Elmira also got a goal from Mitch Wright as well. In addition, Elmira received assists from Craig Johnson, who had two and Jake Weidner, who had three.

The Winter Hawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling 14 minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. Cambridge surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game. The Winter Hawks kept the Sugar Kings' goalie busy throughout the game, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 30 saves on 33 shots.

Cambridge was helped by Cameron Pentsa, who had one goal. Pentsa scored 13:20 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Todd Bannermon picked up the assist. Mitch Klie also scored for Cambridge. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Andrew Coupland, Lawrence Pagnan, Trevor Hache, and Chris Taylor, who contributed one a piece.

Elmira registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Lee Doherty made 35 saves for the Winter Hawks on 39 shots. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Hache was ejected from the game.
