Thorold squeaks by Welland, 3-2

The Thorold Blackhawks and the Welland Jr. Canadians were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Thorold made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Mackenzie Mac Avoy at 5:09 of the third period.

Mac Avoy was all over the ice for the Blackhawks, as he racked up two goals in the win.

Thorold also got a goal from Dan Chudobiak as well. In addition, Thorold received assists from Brian Brosnan, who had two and Kevin Lavoie, Adrian Copeland, Mark Arnone, and Tanner Pagendam, who contributed one a piece.

Welland's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Thorold power plays. The Jr. Canadians kept Thorold's goalie busy throughout the game, and Vinny Merante made 36 saves on 38 shots.

Welland was led by Braden Curry, who finished with one goal and one assist. Curry scored on the power play 14:11 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Jr. Canadians had gained a power play chance when Brosnan was whistled for cross checking. Jason Lacroix picked up the assist. Riley Brooks also scored for Welland. More assists for Welland came via Chris Brown and Mack Seebach, who each chipped in one.

The Blackhawks incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ben Hughes was ejected from the game. Welland's Chris McDougall stopped 23 shots out of the 26 that he faced. The Jr. Canadians incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
