Chatham beats London 2-1 after comeback scare

The London Nationals tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Chatham Maroons would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 2-1.

Chatham made the score 2-0 on a goal by Eric Palazzolo at 13:01 in the second period, and London got as close as 2-1 when Aaron Dartch scored 4:22 into the third period.

The Nationals were stymied by the Maroons netminder Darien Ekblad, who stopped 26 shots during the victory. Ekblad managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.92 prior to the game.

Chatham pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 50 penalty minutes.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:38 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Maroons forced London goalie Nick Dampier to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Chatham additionally got points from Steven Szekesy, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Nate Pietens and Brennan Feasey, who contributed one a piece.

The the Nationals penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. London surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. The Nationals' offense operated below they season average. London averages 4.0 goals per game. The Nationals were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to one goal off of nine man advantages.

More assists for London came via Noah Schwartz and Blake Thomas, who each chipped in one.

Chatham registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For the Maroons, Jake Flegel and Evan Mascaro were ejected from the contest. Nick Dampier made 32 saves for London on 34 shots. Team's Shawn Crowley and Ryan Wells were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
