Early goals doom Guelph, falls to Waterloo, 12-1

A five-goal first period deficit cost the Guelph Hurricanes, which could not recover and fell to the Waterloo Siskins, 12-1.

Waterloo got the win with help from a great game by Christian Mroczkowski, who had two goals and one assist. Mroczkowski scored the first of his two goals at 4:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo. Michael Ryan provided the assist. Mroczkowski's next tally made the score 3-0 Waterloo with 9:01 left in the first period. The Siskins had taken the advantage when Guelph's Ben Rolefson got sent off for roughing. Trevor Atkinson APJ assisted on the tally.

Waterloo made the Hurricanes' netminders to work between the pipes, getting 50 shots and forcing 38 saves. Quinton Henry made 18 stops and Marcus Nepinak made 20. The Siskins managed to stay out of the box better than usual, finishing with one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Waterloo ended up below its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. The Siskins' goal total was higher than their season average. Waterloo has scored at the pace of 4.2 goals per game during the current campaign. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals.

Waterloo also got points from Atkinson APJ, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Ryan, who also had one goal and two assists, James Soper, who also registered one goal and one assist, Blake Hetherington, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Adam Campagnolo, who also had one goal and three assists, Ryan Doucette, who also registered one goal and one assist, Jacob Bonin, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Stephen Witiuk, who also tallied two goals and two assists. Jordan Cale also scored for Waterloo. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Jacob Ariss, Eric Cimino, Brandon Jones, and Matthew Mah, who each chipped in one and Andrew Brubacher and Danny Hanlon, who contributed two a piece.

Guelph found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays.

Darren Huck made 24 saves for the Siskins on 25 shots. The Hurricanes registered zero goals on one power play opportunities.
