Leamington holds on for 3-2 win against Cambridge

The Cambridge Winter Hawks tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Leamington Flyers held on for a 3-2 victory.

Leamington took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Cambridge storm back on a Todd Bannermon goal 15:56 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Flyers were sparked by Nathan Opblinger, who tallied one goal. Opblinger scored 14:24 into the third period to make the score Leamington.

Leamington kept the Winter Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Lucas Machalski made 30 saves on 33 shots. The Flyers were held back by their power play unit, which tallied one goal on 10 chances.

Kyle Shaw also scored for Leamington. Other players who recorded assists for Leamington were Brett Babkirk, Alex Seguin, and Chris Scott, who contributed one a piece.

Cambridge forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 28.0 minutes per game the Winter Hawks had been spending in the box. Cambridge forced Leamington goalie Austyn Roudebush to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

Cambridge also got a goal from Cameron Pentsa as well. More assists for Cambridge came via Mitch Klie, Trevor Hache, and Chris Taylor, who each chipped in one.

The Flyers' Roudebush stopped 29 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Leamington incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Flyers, Troy Cox was ejected from the game. The Winter Hawks registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brennon Pearce was ejected from the game.
