Early goals doom Listowel, falls to Elmira, 7-2

The Elmira Sugar Kings opened up a four-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 7-2 over the Listowel Cyclones.

Jake Weidner was all over the ice for Elmira, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. Weidner scored 11:09 into the third period to make the score 7-2 Elmira.

Listowel's power play was ineffective against the Sugar Kings' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Elmira forced Cyclones' netminders to work all game long, totaling 59 shots and forcing 52 saves. Daniel Dekoning made 20 stops and Drew Reinhardt made 32. The Sugar Kings' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Elmira averages 4.1 goals per contest. The Sugar Kings struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 30 penalty minutes for nine opposing power plays.

Elmira also got points from Adam Dauda, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Elmira also had goals scored by Matt Harding, who had one and Brady Campbell and Mitch Wright, who each put in two. More assists for Elmira came via Craig Johnson, who had one and Matt Sheick, Zac Coulter, and Clayton Greer, who each chipped in two.

The Cyclones kept Elmira's goalie busy throughout the game, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 46 saves on 48 shots.

Listowel was led by Jacob Robitaille, who racked up one goal and one assist. Robitaille scored on the power play 6:23 into the third period to make the score 6-2 Elmira. The Cyclones had gained a power play chance when Matt Pascuzzo was whistled for slashing. Brandon Preistap assisted on the tally. Listowel also got a goal from Patrick Bell as well. Other players who recorded assists for Listowel were Caleb Cameron and Sam Feagan, who contributed one a piece.

The Sugar Kings registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For Elmira, Justin Cooke and Cass Frey were ejected from the contest. Listowel ended with 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors and two majors. Team's Dylan Sayles and Colten Pickett were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
