Machalski stymies Kitchener, Cambridge wins 2-1

Lucas Machalski had a standout game with 31 saves, and the Cambridge Winter Hawks beat the Kitchener Dutchmen 2-1.

Cambridge pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 26 penalty minutes.

The Winter Hawks were led by Cody Gratton, who registered one goal. Gratton scored on the power play 15:08 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Cambridge. A high sticking penalty on Steven Jakiela had put Cambridge on the power play. Brennon Pearce provided the assist.

The Winter Hawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Kitchener to score on any of its 11 power plays. The Dutchmen were unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Cambridge also got a goal from Hudson Michaelis as well. More assists for Cambridge came via Lawrence Pagnan, who had one and Andrew Coupland, who had two.

Kitchener's offense operated below it season average. The Dutchmen average 3.8 goals per game. Kitchener excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Cambridge to get one power play goal on 11 chances. The Dutchmen forced the Winter Hawks goalie Machalski to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. Kitchener's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Dutchmen finished with 36 penalty minutes.

Kitchener was led by Brett Clampitt, who scored the team's only goal. Clampitt scored 3:50 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Kitchener. Jakiela assisted on the tally.

Marc Williams made 30 saves for the Dutchmen on 32 shots. For Kitchener, Jakiela was ejected from the game.
