Listowel vanquishes Cambridge in shootout, 7-6 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Listowel Cyclones defeated the Cambridge Winter Hawks in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Listowel came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Cyclones trailed 4-1 after a goal by Cambridge's Cameron Pentsa at 7:07 in the second period. Listowel knotted things up at 6-6 on a power play goal by Jacob Robitaille at 17:03 in the third period.

The the Cyclones penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Listowel had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Cyclones' offense rang up 36 shots on the Winter Hawks' net. Listowel outdid its season average for goals scored. The Cyclones average 4.1 goals per game.

Listowel was helped by Ben Shelley, who tallied two goals. Shelley scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:46 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Cambridge. Sam Feagan picked up the assist. Shelley's next tally on the power play made the score 5-5 with 6:29 left in the third period. The Cyclones had gotten the advantage when Cambridge's Trevor Hache was sent off for slashing. Scott Pawson assisted on the tally. Listowel additionally got points from Caleb Cameron, who also had one goal and one assist. Colten Pickett also scored for Listowel. More assists for Listowel came via Sam Harris, Mac Nichol, Tanner Mighton, and Patrick Bell, who contributed one a piece.

The Winter Hawks kept Listowel's goalie busy throughout the game, and Drew Reinhardt made 44 saves on 50 shots. Cambridge's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Winter Hawks finished with 40 penalty minutes.

Cambridge was led by Cody Gratton, who racked up two goals and one assist. Gratton scored the first of his two goals at 3:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge. Hache picked up the assist. Gratton's next tally made the score 3-1 Cambridge with 13:03 left in the second period. Andrew Coupland assisted on the tally. Cambridge also got points from Chris Taylor, who also registered one goal and one assist. Cambridge also got a goal from Mitch Facey as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Christian Barnard, Mitch Klie, and Maxime Lamontagne, who each chipped in one.

The Cyclones registered four goals on 10 power play opportunities. For Listowel, Bell was ejected from the game. The Winter Hawks' Lee Doherty stopped 29 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Cambridge registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. The Winter Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brennon Pearce was ejected from the game.
