Stoney Creek squeaks by Welland, 3-2

The Stoney Creek Warriors and the Welland Jr. Canadians were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Stoney Creek made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

The Warriors gained the winning advantage on a goal by Dave Eccles 14:01 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Stoney Creek was led by Eccles, who racked up one goal.

The Warriors' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Welland power plays. Stoney Creek's offense rang up 32 shots on Welland's net.

Wesley St. Amand also scored for Stoney Creek. In addition, Stoney Creek received assists from Jake Bain, Marco Mattina, and Zach Niemanen, who contributed one a piece.

The Jr. Canadians put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Warriors to score on any of their three power plays. Stoney Creek was unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

Welland was helped by Ryan Migliaccio, who registered one goal. Migliaccio scored 10:11 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Braden Curry picked up the assist. Welland additionally got points from Curry, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Cole McKnight and Kyle Phibbs, who each chipped in one.

Alexander Brooks-Potts recorded 43 saves for the Warriors. Stoney Creek incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. For the Warriors, Blake Luscombe was ejected from the game. Matt Coulombe made 29 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 32 shots. Welland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Derrik Vannas was ejected from the game.
