LaSalle beats St. Thomas 6-5 after comeback scare

The St. Thomas Stars tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the LaSalle Vipers held on for a 6-5 victory.

LaSalle made the score 6-4 on a goal by Nathan Savage at 15:53 in the third period, and St. Thomas got as close as 6-5 when Braden Hellems scored 18:34 into the third period.

Ben Hanus had a great game for the Vipers, netting two goals. Hanus found the back of the net 1:45 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again while 1:04 into the third to make the score 5-4 LaSalle.

LaSalle's offense rang up 37 shots on the Stars' net. The Vipers bested their season scoring average. LaSalle averages 3.9 goals per game.

LaSalle also got points from Savage, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Dylan Seguin, who also registered one goal and one assist. LaSalle also got a goal from Korey Morgan as well. In addition, LaSalle received assists from Blake Jones, who had two and Dylan Denomme, who had three.

St. Thomas stifled the Vipers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Stars kept LaSalle's goalie busy throughout the game, and Conner MacKinnon made 43 saves on 48 shots.

St. Thomas was led by Mike Iacocca, who had one goal and two assists. Iacocca scored 18:39 into the first period to make the score 2-0 St. Thomas. Ian MacDonald provided the assist. St. Thomas additionally got points from Luc Knight, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Drew Collinson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Michael Lucifora also scored for St. Thomas. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Ashton Waters, who had one and Martin Kudla, who had two.

The Vipers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Luke Bierworth rejected 31 shots on goal for the Stars. St. Thomas incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
