Caledonia wins tough contest against Cambridge, 5-3

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Caledonia Corvairs escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

Caledonia gained the winning advantage on a goal by Dalton Riley 12:40 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Riley had two goals to lead the Corvairs to victory.

Caledonia could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Caledonia additionally got points from Jeff Swift, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Brandon Montour, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Nate Mitton also scored for Caledonia. In addition, Caledonia received assists from Ryan Blunt and Scott Dorian, who each chipped in one and Mitch Brown and Brendan Bomberry, who contributed two a piece.

Cambridge forced the Corvairs' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, ripping 32 shots and forcing 29 saves. Justis Husak made 17 stops and Zach Easvet made 12. The Winter Hawks' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Cambridge averages 2.5 goals allowed per game.

The Winter Hawks were led by Cody Gratton, who had two goals and one assist. Gratton scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:26 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Caledonia. A charging penalty on Mitton had put Cambridge on the power play. Trevor Hache provided the assist. Gratton's next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 56 seconds left in the second period. The Winter Hawks had gotten the advantage when Caledonia's Mitton was sent off for slashing. Chris Taylor picked up the assist. Cambridge also got points from Taylor, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Brandon Plourde and Todd Bannermon, who each chipped in one.

The Corvairs registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Lucas Machalski rejected 20 shots on goal for Cambridge. The Winter Hawks incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
