Welland beats St. Catharines 5-3 after comeback scare

The St. Catharines Falcons tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Welland Jr. Canadians would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3.

Welland took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have St. Catharines storm back on a Dan MacEachern goal 20:00 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Jr. Canadians pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 23 penalty minutes.

Welland stifled the Falcons' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Ryan Migliaccio, who had one goal. Migliaccio scored on the power play 9:35 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Welland. A roughing penalty on Kyle Woodhouse had put Welland on the power play. Daryl Thomson assisted on the tally. Welland additionally got points from Brooker Muir, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Adam Mataya also scored for Welland. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Chris Langdon, who had two and Chris Brown, Spencer Giles, and Derrik Vannas, who each chipped in one.

St. Catharines did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Falcons put an average of 7.3 pucks into the net per game. St. Catharines forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Chris McDougall to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots. The Falcons' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. St. Catharines is averaging 2.1 goals against for the season. The Falcons got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. St. Catharines struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 36 penalty minutes for nine opposing power plays.

The Falcons were helped by Julian Luciani, who finished with one goal. Luciani scored 4:12 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Jesse Miller provided the assist. St. Catharines also got points from Tyler Jackson, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for St. Catharines came via Ben Walsh, Greg Jambrosich, Mitch Bennett, and Andy Sturtz, who contributed one a piece.

McDougall rejected 31 shots on goal for Welland. For the Jr. Canadians, Drake Lynds was ejected from the game. St. Catharines took out Marcus Del Conte after he had made 12 saves and installed Jonathon D Ilario in goal, where he finished with seven saves and the loss. The Falcons registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. St. Catharines ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luciani was ejected from the game.
