Welland erases deficit to stun Port Colborne, 4-3

The Port Colborne Pirates could not hold down the Welland Jr. Canadians, and Jr. Canadians erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 4-3 win.

Welland never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Jr. Canadians was down 3-0 after a goal by Port Colborne's Zack Deconilys at 1:40 in the second period. Welland knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Daryl Thomson at 16:41 in the third period. The Jr. Canadians scored the game winner at 17:10 in the third period on a goal by Thomson.

Welland got the win on the strength of a great game by Thomson, who had one goal and two assists.

The Jr. Canadians' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Port Colborne power plays. The Pirates were unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 49 shots on goal.

Welland also got a goal from Adam Mataya as well. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Ryan Migliaccio, who had two and Gabe Ruggi, Matthew Mateljan, and Drake Lynds, who each chipped in one.

Port Colborne put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Welland to score on any of its three power plays. The Pirates were held below their usual level of production. Port Colborne puts an average of 5.1 pucks into the net per game. The Pirates kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Coulombe made 28 saves on 31 shots.

Port Colborne was helped by Bryan Komasara, who racked up one goal and one assist. Komasara scored 12:42 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Port Colborne. Charlie Izaguirre provided the assist. More assists for Port Colborne came via Pat Murphy, Dayne Phillips, Ryan Pilon, and Dima Lavrenov, who contributed one a piece.

Welland incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Real Cormier made 45 saves for the Pirates on 49 shots. Port Colborne incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
