Waterloo squeaks by Elmira, 6-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Waterloo Siskins escaped with a 6-4 victory over the Elmira Sugar Kings.

Waterloo gained the winning advantage on a goal by Stephen Witiuk 15:08 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

James Soper had two goals to lead the Siskins to victory. Soper scored on the power play at 13:46 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo and again while short handed 1:52 into the second to make the score 3-1 Waterloo.

Waterloo surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Siskins average 3.7 goals per game. Waterloo could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game. The defensemen of the Siskins were also effective in Elmira's zone, and came away with two goals.

Waterloo additionally got points from Matthew Mah, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Adam Campagnolo, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Witiuk, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Waterloo also got a goal from Ryan Doucette as well. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Ted Anstett, who had one and Danny Hanlon, who had two.

The Sugar Kings forced Waterloo goalie PJ Bridges to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots. Elmira was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

The Sugar Kings were helped by Matt Harding, who finished with one goal and one assist. Harding scored on the power play 11:07 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Elmira had gotten the advantage when the Siskins' Eric Fischer was sent off for tripping. Clayton Greer picked up the assist. Elmira also got points from Jake Weidner, who also registered one goal and one assist. Matt Sheick also scored for Elmira. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Cass Frey and Mitch Wright, who contributed one a piece.

Waterloo's Bridges stopped 40 shots out of the 44 that he faced. The Siskins registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Hayden Neuman made 24 saves for the Sugar Kings on 29 shots. Elmira incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
