St. Thomas falls to Niagara Falls in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

The Niagara Falls Canucks pulled out a 6-5 (OT) overtime victory over the St. Thomas Stars on a clutch goal by Cole Vinnai.

Niagara Falls was paced on offense by Vinnai and Cam Stewart, who combined for five points. Vinnai tallied one goal and two assists and Stewart also added two goals.

The Canucks forced St. Thomas goalie Luke Bierworth to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

Niagara Falls also got points from Brad Kri, who also registered one goal and one assist and Mitch McIntosh, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Vito Scaringi also scored for Niagara Falls. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Michael Christou, Hunter Johnson, and Derek Dallman, who contributed one a piece and Drew Berkel and Marcus Michalski, who each chipped in two.

The Stars could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

St. Thomas was led by Chris Maton, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Maton scored the first of his two goals at 8:05 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Niagara Falls. Luc Knight provided the assist. Maton's next tally made the score 4-4 with 8:44 left in the second period. The Stars earned a power play opportunity when Frank Nemeth was put in the box for cross checking. Ian MacDonald assisted on the tally. St. Thomas also got a goal from Trevor Abbott as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Blair Mincer and Braden Hellems, who contributed one a piece.

Johnson recorded 22 saves for Niagara Falls. The Canucks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Niagara Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Nemeth was ejected from the game. St. Thomas' Bierworth stopped 27 shots out of the 33 that he faced. The Stars registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For St. Thomas, Matt Schurr was ejected from the game.
