Campbell's hat trick boosts Elmira over Caledonia, 5-4

Brady Campbell lifted the Elmira Sugar Kings to a 5-4 victory with a hat trick against the Caledonia Corvairs.

Campbell notched his first tally 1:03 into the first period. He then added goals at 12:54 into the second and at 5:57 into the third.

Elmira led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Sugar Kings' Pat McKelvie(APJ)'s scored short handed at 9:37 in the first period to put Elmira up 3-0.

The the Sugar Kings penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and one major for 59 minutes in penalty time. Elmira surpassed its season average of 29.0 penalty minutes per game. The Sugar Kings' offense rang up 31 shots on Caledonia's net. Elmira had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances.

Elmira also got a goal from Brodie Whitehead as well. More assists for Elmira came via Jake Weidner, who had three and Justin Cooke, Cass Frey, Adam Dauda, and Mitch Wright, who contributed one a piece.

The Corvairs racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 51 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 39.0 minutes per game Caledonia had been spending in the box. The Corvairs forced the Sugar Kings goalie Hayden Neuman to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. The defensemen of Caledonia were also effective in Elmira's zone, and came away with two goals.

The Corvairs were helped by Ryan Blunt, who had two goals. Blunt scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:34 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Elmira. Connor Murphy picked up the assist. Blunt's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Elmira with 12:03 left in the third period. Caledonia had gotten the advantage when the Sugar Kings' Neuman was sent off for slashing. Steven Comegna provided the assist. Caledonia additionally got points from Comegna, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Tyler Norrie also scored for Caledonia. Other players who recorded assists for Caledonia were Jeff Swift, Greg Christmas, and Brandon Montour, who each chipped in one.

Neuman recorded 31 saves for Elmira. Team's Brandon Stewart and Clayton Greer were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Corvairs' Zach Easvet stopped 26 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Caledonia registered four goals on 13 power play opportunities. The Corvairs ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Fabrizio Ricci was ejected from the game.
