Welland survives Thorold comeback, wins 6-4

The Thorold Blackhawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Welland Jr. Canadians would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-4.

Welland made the score 6-3 on a goal by Cole McKnight at 4:25 in the third period, and Thorold got as close as 6-4 when Kevin Lavoie scored 8:41 into the third period.

Braden Curry was all over the ice for the Jr. Canadians, as he tallied two goals and three assists in the win. Curry scored the first of his two goals at 9:22 into the first period to make the score 1-1. McKnight assisted on the tally. Curry's next tally made the score 4-2 Welland with 16 seconds left in the second period. Welland had gained a power play chance when Owen Sobchak was whistled for abuse of officials. Derrik Vannas picked up the assist.

The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 45 shots on the Blackhawks' net. Welland outdid its season average for goals scored. The Jr. Canadians have scored at the pace of 2.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

Welland additionally got points from McKnight, who also had two goals and one assist, Chris Brown, who also racked up one goal and two assists, and Daryl Thomson, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Welland received assists from Brooker Muir and Mack Seebach, who contributed one a piece.

Thorold kept Welland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Matt Coulombe made 31 saves on 35 shots. The Blackhawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Thorold was helped by Dan Chudobiak, who registered one goal. Chudobiak scored 4:09 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Welland. Carson Johnstone provided the assist. Myles Falasca also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Ben Hughes, Roger Sherwood, and Mark Arnone, who each chipped in one and Joel Forestell and Ed Creighton, who contributed two a piece.

The Jr. Canadians incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Blake Richard recorded 39 saves for the Blackhawks. Thorold registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Team's Arnone and Tanner Pagendam were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
