Waterloo beats Guelph 5-0 as Bridges gains shutout

The Waterloo Siskins used a sparkling performance by PJ Bridges to take down the Guelph Hurricanes, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Waterloo's 5-0 shutout victory.

Adam Campagnolo had one goal and two assists to lead the Siskins. Campagnolo scored on the power play 5:21 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo. Waterloo had gotten the advantage when Guelph's Craig Martini was sent off for hooking. Jordan Cale picked up the assist.

The Siskins forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 14 minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. Waterloo surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. The Siskins stifled the Hurricanes' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Waterloo was steadier on the defensive front than it has been for much of this season. The Siskins average 2.4 goals allowed per game. Waterloo forced Guelph goalie Lee Doherty to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

Waterloo also got points from Cale, who also registered one goal and one assist and James Soper, who also had one goal and one assist. Trevor Atkinson APJ also scored for Waterloo. More assists for Waterloo came via Ryan Doucette, who had two and Eric Cimino, Christian Mroczkowski, and Daniel Hanlon, who each chipped in one.

The Hurricanes racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 17 minors and one major for 69 minutes in penalty time. Guelph had been averaging 28.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hurricanes' offense rang up 31 shots on the Siskins' net. Guelph got its opportunities on the power play, but did not convert any of its 10 chances.

Waterloo's Bridges stopped 31 shots out of the 31 that he faced. The Siskins registered four goals on 13 power play opportunities. Waterloo ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jacob Ariss was ejected from the game. Doherty recorded 38 saves for the Hurricanes. Team's Daniel Cotroneo and Chad Herron were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
