Chatham survives penalties, beats St. Thomas, 6-2Chatham Memorial Arena Sun, Sep 23, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Chatham Maroons' penalty kill was superb, as Chatham survived multiple penalties to beat the St. Thomas Stars, 6-2. The Maroons were paced by Evan Mascaro, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Mascaro scored on the power play 5:19 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Chatham. Chatham earned a power play opportunity when Blair Mincer was put in the box for slashing. Sean Myers provided the assist. The Maroons were relatively well disciplined in the game, receiving only nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Chatham stayed under its season average of 42.0 penalties minutes per game this season. The Maroons forced St. Thomas goalie Tynan Lauziere to work between the pipes, taking 48 shots. Chatham got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game. Chatham additionally got points from Myers, who also had two goals and one assist. Jake Flegel also scored for Chatham. More assists for Chatham came via Brayden Hopkins, who had two, Blake Blondeel, who had three, and Trevor Richardson, Oliver Blayne, and Eric Palazzolo, who each chipped in one. The Stars' offense operated below they season average. St. Thomas puts an average of 4.5 pucks into the net per game. The Stars' offense rang up 38 shots on the Maroons' net. St. Thomas was helped by Ian MacDonald, who tallied one goal. MacDonald scored 34 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 St. Thomas. Matt Schurr picked up the assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Mike Iacocca as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Michael Lucifora, who had two. Scott Tricker recorded 36 saves for Chatham. The Maroons registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Chatham ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Steven Szekesy was ejected from the game. Tynan Lauziere made 42 saves for the Stars on 47 shots. St. Thomas totaled 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors and two majors and went 1-for-7 on the power play. For the Stars, Scott Mitchell was ejected from the game.
