Granite City uses shootout to best St. Louis, 5-4 (2-0 SO)

Hunter Schneider scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Granite City Lumberjacks picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (2-0 SO) win over the St. Louis Jr. Blues.

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Granite City also got a shootout goal from Schneider.

The Lumberjacks were led by Drew Otto, who racked up one goal and one assist. Otto scored on the power play 14:23 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Granite City. Granite City earned a power play opportunity when Kerry McGlynn was put in the box for tripping. Zac Sikich picked up the assist.

The Lumberjacks were sparked by Otto, who registered one goal and one assist.

Granite City put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow St. Louis to score on any of its four power plays.

Granite City additionally got points from Aidan Verbeke, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Brett Love, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Blayne Ellson also scored for Granite City. In addition, Granite City received assists from Blake Phenow, Matt Peterson, and Nick Turbitt, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Blues gave up more goals than its normal season average. St. Louis is averaging 1.6 goal against for the season.

The Jr. Blues were led by Andrew Kovacich, who racked up two goals. Kovacich scored the first of his two goals at 6:32 into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Louis. Tommy Heinzman assisted on the tally. Kovacich's next tally made the score 3-2 Granite City with 14:12 left in the second period. St. Louis also got a goal from Lukas Daniels as well. More assists for St. Louis came via Cody Guidorzi, who had one.

Scott Murray made 25 saves for the Lumberjacks on 29 shots. Granite City incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. St. Louis' Clint Steinmeyer stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Jr. Blues ended with 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. St. Louis ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kovacich was ejected from the game.
