Hughes nets hat trick, leads North Iowa to 14-1 win over Twin City

James Hughes netted a hat trick to lead the North Iowa Bulls over the Twin City Steel, 14-1.

Hughes got on the scoresheet 6:41 into the second period. He then added goals at 12:12 into the second and at 18:04 into the second.

North Iowa led by only one goal at the end of the first period, but put the game away by scoring seven goals in the second.

The Bulls' Matthew Bartels was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 43 saves and let only one puck past him. Bartels certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.39 entering the contest.

North Iowa forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. North Iowa's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Twin City power plays. The Bulls found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, North Iowa averages 6.2 goals per contest.

North Iowa also got points from Jake Johnson, who also had one goal and three assists, Eric Behrend, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Connor Langfield, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Kyle Krueger, who also registered two goals and one assist, Matt Kroska, who also had two goals and three assists, Richie Marenis, who also tallied one goal and three assists, and Timothy Santopoalo, who also racked up three goals and two assists. More assists for North Iowa came via Ron Lindgren, who had two and Patrick Sivets, Conor Jonasson, and Taylor Brown, who each chipped in one.

Twin City could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Steel average 3.5 goals per game. Twin City's offense rang up 44 shots on the Bulls' net. The Steel found themselves short handed often, totaling 23 penalty minutes and allowing four power plays.

Twin City was led by Calvin Miska, who scored the team's only goal. Miska scored short handed 38 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Steel played down a man on Tom Bartel's slashing. Brody Peterson assisted on the tally.

Parker Butler took the loss and made 13 saves before being replaced by Sawyer Marshall who made two saves.
