Granite City survives Alexandria comeback, wins 5-3

The Alexandria Blizzard almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but the Granite City Lumberjacks managed to pull out a 5-3 win in the end.

Granite City led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Lumberjacks' Zac Sikich's scored at 3:10 in the third period to put Granite City up 4-1.

The Lumberjacks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Granite City's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Lumberjacks finished with 26 penalty minutes.

Granite City was helped by Mitch Humphries, who had one goal. Humphries scored 17:14 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Granite City. Aaron Azevedo assisted on the tally. Granite City also got points from Azevedo, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Alex Koopmeiners also scored for Granite City. In addition, Granite City received assists from Blake Phenow, who had two and Matt Raiola, Drew Otto, and Aaron Storch, who contributed one a piece.

Alexandria put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Lumberjacks to score on any of their nine power plays. The Blizzard's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Alexandria averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. The Blizzard were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 44 penalty minutes.

Alexandria was helped by Tanner Duffney, who finished with one goal. Duffney scored short handed 9:53 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Granite City. The Blizzard played down a man on Danny Pelzer's tripping. Chayce Coenen picked up the assist. Alexandria also got a goal from Bryce Mitzel as well. Other players who recorded assists for Alexandria were Ian Eckland, who had two and Garrett Skinner, Mick Dhein, and Karson Kuntz, who each chipped in one.

Scott Murray rejected 26 shots on goal for Granite City. Chase Wilson recorded 25 saves for Alexandria.
