Toledo shrugs off penalties, upends Queen City, 2-1

The Queen City Steam failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Toledo Cherokee shook off a number of penalties to win, 2-1.

Toledo was led by Brandon Layman, who registered one goal. Layman scored on the power play 15:53 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Toledo. A slashing penalty on Nick Brusa had put the Cherokee on the power play. Blake Podgorski picked up the assist.

Toledo forced Queen City goalie Matt McLaughlin to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Toledo also got points from Podgorski, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Toledo came via Brett Podgorski, Kyler Omey, and Jordan Fogarty, who contributed one a piece.

The Steam were led by Devin Fracassi, who scored the team's only goal. Fracassi scored on the power play 4:50 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Queen City. Queen City earned a power play opportunity when Jake Manders was put in the box for checking from behind. Chas Johnson assisted on the tally.

The Cherokee's Nathan Miller stopped 18 shots out of the 19 that he faced. Toledo totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Cherokee ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Donnie Nagle was ejected from the game. McLaughlin recorded 35 saves for the Steam. Queen City totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play.
