North Iowa beats Granite City 5-3 as Sivets gets hat trick

The Granite City Lumberjacks could not stop the North Iowa Bulls' Patrick Sivets, who tallied a hat trick in a 5-3 win.

Sivets got on the scoresheet 12:11 into the first period. He then added goals at 37 seconds into the second and at 19:45 into the third.

North Iowa racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game the Bulls had been spending in the box. North Iowa kept Granite City's goalie busy throughout the game, and Scott Murray made 33 saves on 38 shots.

North Iowa also got points from James Hughes, who also had one goal and one assist. North Iowa also got a goal from Timothy Santopoalo as well. Other players who recorded assists for North Iowa were Jake Johnson, Eric Behrend, and Tony Paulson, who each chipped in one and Connor Langfield and Matt Kroska, who contributed two a piece.

The Lumberjacks were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and two majors for 58 minutes in penalty time. Granite City surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. The Lumberjacks' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Granite City averages 2.4 goals allowed per game.

The Lumberjacks were led by Drew Otto, who grabbed two goals. Otto scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:06 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Matt Peterson assisted on the tally. Otto's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 North Iowa with 2:56 left in the second period. Granite City had taken the advantage when the Bulls' Taylor Brown got sent off for hooking. Aidan Verbeke picked up the assist. Aaron Storch also scored for Granite City. More assists for Granite City came via Zac Sikich, who had one.

Matthew Bartels made 25 saves for North Iowa on 28 shots. The Bulls registered two goals on six power play opportunities. The Lumberjacks registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For Granite City, Peterson and Sikich were ejected from the contest.
