Three Rivers uses big second period to beat Michigan, 7-3

The Three Rivers Vengeance scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Michigan Mountain Cats and clinch a 7-3 win.

Nico Vecchio had two goals to lead Three Rivers to victory. Vecchio found the back of the net short handed 9:13 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Three Rivers and again while 47 seconds into the second to make the score 3-1 Three Rivers.

Michigan's power play was ineffective against the Vengeance's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Three Rivers was often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and two majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The Vengeance surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. Three Rivers forced the Mountain Cats goalie Dominic Juncaj to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. The Vengeance's goal total was higher than their season average. Three Rivers averages 3.7 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Three Rivers additionally got points from Alex Berardinelli, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Vincent Susi, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Three Rivers also had goals scored by Stephen Budkey, who had one and Chase Leonelli, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Three Rivers were Daniel Trageser, Tom Diffendal, and Gavin Cummings, who contributed one a piece and Jonah Hoover, Kevin Kenny, and Robbie Sigurdsson, who each chipped in two.

Michigan forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and two majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The Mountain Cats had been averaging 37.0 minutes in penalties per game. Michigan's offense rang up 36 shots on the Vengeance's net.

The Mountain Cats were helped by Guy Soulliere, who racked up two goals. Soulliere scored the first of his two goals short handed at 16:29 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Three Rivers. Michigan played down a man on Aaron Roehm's tripping. Austin Sartorius provided the assist. Soulliere's next tally short handed made the score 6-3 Three Rivers with 10:40 left in the third period. A delay of game penalty on Kenny had put the Mountain Cats on the power play. Alex Kopek picked up the assist. John Arms also scored for Michigan. More assists for Michigan came via Ben Mack, who had one.

John OBrien made 33 saves for Three Rivers on 36 shots. The Vengeance registered four goals on eight power play opportunities. Juncaj rejected 26 shots on goal for Michigan. The Mountain Cats ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Derek Ried was ejected from the game.
