Toledo completes comeback, beats Metro, 4-3

Lakeland Rink1    Sat, Oct 06, 2012

The Toledo Cherokee climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the Metro Jets, 4-3.

Toledo never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Cherokee trailed 3-1 after a goal by Metro's Mike Gambino at 9:33 in the second period. Toledo tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Alec Gerred at 3:35 in the third period. The Cherokee scored the game winner at 15:26 in the third period on a goal by Gerred.

Toledo racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 34.0 minutes per game the Cherokee had been spending in the box. Toledo stifled the Jets' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Metro was unable to stop the Cherokee from sending pucks towards the net, and Toledo eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Zachary Armstrong also scored for Toledo. In addition, Toledo received assists from Connor Crowe, who had two and Andrew Benyo and Austin Turner, who each chipped in one.

The Jets' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Toledo power plays. Metro kept the Cherokee's goalie busy throughout the game, and Hunter Vorva made 34 saves on 37 shots.

The Jets were led by Doug Andrews, who had two goals. Andrews scored the first of his two goals at 26 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Metro. Luke Rendino assisted on the tally. Andrews' next tally made the score 2-0 Metro with 18:35 left in the first period. Rendino picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Metro were Andrew Palushaj, who had two and Ryan Chapie and Devon D'Angelo, who contributed one a piece.

For Toledo, Blake Podgorski was ejected from the game. Metro's Austin Julvezan stopped 30 shots out of the 34 that he faced. The Jets incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
