Topeka holds on for 4-2 win against Wichita Falls

The Topeka RoadRunners survived a determined comeback attempt by the Wichita Falls Wildcats on the way to a 4-2 win.

A goal by Tyler Groat put Topeka up 4-1 in the third period, but Wichita Falls pulled to within two on Chris Knudson's tally 19:46 into the third period.

The RoadRunners were sparked by Sean Gaffney, who registered one goal. Gaffney scored 17:45 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Topeka. Kyle Sharkey assisted on the tally.

With 39 shots on target during the contest, Topeka exceeded the 23.4 shots it averages per game this year.

Topeka also got points from Sharkey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ross Luedtke also scored for Topeka. In addition, Topeka received assists from Kevin Patterson, Michal Pastor, Jake Kamrass, Trace Strahle, Tyler Andrew, and Michael Covach, who each chipped in one.

The Wildcats' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Topeka power plays. Wichita Falls failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 21 pucks on goal after averaging 28.4 shots per game this season.

The Wildcats were helped by Kyle Bauman, who tallied one goal. Bauman scored 11:11 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Wichita Falls. O'Neal L picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita Falls were Evan Cowley, Colin Staub, and Rudy Junda, who contributed one a piece.

The RoadRunners' Spencer Viele stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Topeka incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Evan Cowley made 35 saves for Wichita Falls on 39 shots. The Wildcats incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
