Springfield uses big games from Atkinson and Leibo to down Kalamazoo, 7-4

Behind two goals from Ryan Atkinson and one goal Terry Leibo, the Springfield Jr. Blues downed the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings 7-4.

Atkinson scored the first of his two goals at 11:38 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Springfield. Jeff McFarland picked up the assist. Atkinson's next tally made the score 4-4 with 3:17 left in the second period. Parker Johnson provided the assist. Leibo scored on the power play 18:02 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Springfield. A holding penalty on Trevor Boyd had put Springfield on the power play. Johnson assisted on the tally.

The Jr. Blues found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Springfield has scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The Jr. Blues' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in three goals to Kalamazoo's power play unit. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. The 56 shots that Springfield put on net surpassed the Jr. Blues' average of 25.1 shots per game this season.

Springfield also got points from Jack Sloan, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Brett Skibba, who also registered one goal and one assist, and McFarland, who also had one goal and one assist. Springfield also got a goal from Matt Iacopelli as well. In addition, Springfield received assists from Ji Young Li, Trevor Stone, and Jon Carkeek, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. K-Wings' offense rang up 32 shots on Springfield's net.

Kalamazoo was led by Robbie Payne, who registered two goals. Payne scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 8:33 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Jr. K-Wings had taken the advantage when the Jr. Blues' Johnson got sent off for tripping. Taylor Burden picked up the assist. Payne's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with seven seconds left in the first period. Kalamazoo had gained a power play chance when Alex Baskakov was whistled for too many men. Mark Esshaki also scored for Kalamazoo. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Kyle Gattelaro, Nick Kovalchik, Mac McDonnell, Danny Hamburg, and Mike Fazio, who contributed one a piece.

Matt Leon made 28 saves for Springfield on 32 shots. The Jr. Blues incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Alex Okicki made 34 saves before being replaced by Marcus Due-Boje, who took the loss and made 15 saves. The Jr. K-Wings ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
