Odessa's comeback falls short, Corpus Christi wins 5-3

The Corpus Christi IceRays came close to giving away a four-goal lead to the Odessa Jackalopes, but did just enough to escape with a 5-3 victory.

Corpus Christi led by four goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the IceRays' Grant Hutton's scored at 3:33 in the second period to put Corpus Christi up 4-0.

The IceRays racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game Corpus Christi had been spending in the box. The IceRays got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. Corpus Christi put 37 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.2 it averages per game.

The IceRays were led by Emil Romig, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Romig scored 12:46 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Corpus Christi. Ryan Chiasson picked up the assist. Corpus Christi also got points from Rudy Sulmonde, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Perry DArrisso, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Corpus Christi also got a goal from Andrew Paras as well. More assists for Corpus Christi came via Brandon Smith, Lucas McDiarmid, Beau Walker, and Eric Purcell, who each chipped in one.

The Odessa penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled four minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Jackalopes surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. By firing 49 shots on goal, Odessa exceeded the 14.7 shots it averages per game this year.

The Jackalopes were helped by Rif Taff, who registered one goal. Taff scored on the power play 5:49 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Corpus Christi. Odessa had taken the advantage when Corpus Christi's DArrisso got sent off for cross checking. Stephen Inman provided the assist. Odessa additionally got points from Taylor Portner, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. John Feemster also scored for Odessa. In addition, Odessa received assists from Anthony Olguin, Mike Mezzano, Dylan Campbell, and Matt Volonnino, who contributed one a piece.

The IceRays' Hayden Stewart stopped 46 shots out of the 49 that he faced. Corpus Christi registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Jackalopes took out Erick Majerle after he had made nine saves and installed Nick Deery in goal, where he finished with 23 saves and the loss. Odessa registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
