Fresno uses early goal to top Fairbanks, 2-1

The Fresno Monsters took the lead against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory.

Gordon Wells provided Fresno with the game-winning tally when he scored 13:43 into the the first period. Newton Fuller assisted on the tally.

The Monsters' Tomas Sholl was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 36 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Sholl will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.05.

Fresno was paced by Matt Salituro, who registered one goal. Salituro scored 6:53 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Fresno. Tyler Shipstad provided the assist.

The Monsters excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. With 21 shots on target during the contest, Fresno exceeded the 15.1 shots it averages per game this year.

Fairbanks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Monsters to score on any of their four power plays. The Ice Dogs could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Fairbanks averages 3.2 goals per game. The Ice Dogs forced Fresno goalie Sholl to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Fairbanks was led by Garret Clemment, who scored the team's only goal. Clemment scored 13:08 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Fresno. Curran Klein assisted on the tally.

The Monsters incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Ice Dogs' Kevin Aldridge stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Fairbanks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
