Aberdeen survives Brookings comeback, wins 2-1

Odde Ice Center    Sat, Mar 09, 2013

The Brookings Blizzard tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Aberdeen Wings held on for a 2-1 victory.

A goal by Jordan Heller put Aberdeen up 2-0 in the first period, but Brookings pulled to within one on Eetu Karvinen's tally 9:02 into the third period.

Heller was all over the ice for the Wings, as he grabbed two goals in the win.

Aberdeen put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Blizzard to score on any of their seven power plays. The Wings relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Heller, Kyle Haak and Justin Parizek took 18 of the team's 32 shots.

In addition, Aberdeen received assists from Steven Johnson, Peter Krieger, and Zach Nagelvoort, who contributed one a piece.

By firing 36 shots on goal, Brookings exceeded the 29.4 shots it averages per game this year.

More assists for Brookings came via Joe Anderson and Matt Youso, who each chipped in one.

Aberdeen's Nagelvoort stopped 35 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Wings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Drew Weigman rejected 30 shots on goal for the Blizzard. Brookings incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
