Port Huron beats Kalamazoo 4-3 after comeback scare

The Port Huron Fighting Falcons survived a determined comeback attempt by the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings on the way to a 4-3 win.

Port Huron took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have Kalamazoo storm back on a Brett Beauvais goal 19:46 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Fighting Falcons pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 26 penalty minutes.

Port Huron stifled the Jr. K-Wings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Fighting Falcons' defensemen bolstered Port Huron's offensive attack, as they bombarded Alex Okicki with 16 shots. The Fighting Falcons put 33 shots on net during the contest, more than the 23.4 they average per game.

Port Huron was helped by Rick DeRosa, who registered one goal. DeRosa scored 18:58 into the third period to make the score Port Huron. Ryan Nick picked up the assist. Port Huron also got points from Easton Powers, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Mick Bruce also scored for Port Huron. In addition, Port Huron received assists from Dunk Abbott, Tyler Spezia, Vito Aluia, Payden Mielke, and Alex Blankenburg, who contributed one a piece.

Kalamazoo was helped by Mike Fazio, who grabbed one goal. Fazio scored 17:38 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Taylor Burden assisted on the tally. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Mac McDonnell as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Luc Boby, who had two and Sam Johnson, Lucas Kohls, and Nick Kovalchik, who each chipped in one.

Blankenburg recorded 22 saves for the Fighting Falcons. Port Huron registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Jr. K-Wings' Okicki stopped 29 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Kalamazoo incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
