Johnstown wins tough contest against Springfield, 4-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Johnstown Tomahawks escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Springfield Jr. Blues.

Johnstown gained the winning advantage on a goal by Cody Boyd 1:12 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

The Tomahawks were led by Mitch Kontny, who racked up one goal and one assist. Kontny scored on the power play 8:50 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Johnstown. Johnstown had taken the advantage when Springfield's Jon Carkeek got sent off for tripping. Jesse Kessler picked up the assist.

The Tomahawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Jr. Blues to score on any of their five power plays. Johnstown was below its usual level of shot production, taking 20 shots compared to the 28.9 the Tomahawks average. Johnstown could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 21 minutes in penalties during the game.

Johnstown additionally got points from JB Baker, who also registered one goal and one assist. Johnstown also got a goal from Jordan Watt as well. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Matt Williams, who had two and Mitch Hall, Jeff Bergh, and Cody Gylling, who each chipped in one.

Springfield was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game the Jr. Blues had been spending in the box.

Springfield was helped by Ryan Atkinson, who grabbed one goal. Atkinson scored 12:33 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Johnstown. Jack Sloan provided the assist. Brett Skibba also scored for Springfield. Other players who recorded assists for Springfield were Davis Dekorte and Tom Cooney, who contributed one a piece.

Collin Brennan made 21 saves for the Tomahawks on 23 shots. Johnstown registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Matt Leon rejected 16 shots on goal for the Jr. Blues.
