Aberdeen vanquishes Brookings in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Aberdeen Wings defeated the Brookings Blizzard in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. Brookings' shootout goal was scored by Eetu Karvinen. In addition to the clincher, Aberdeen got a shootout goal from Justin Parizek.

The Wings came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Aberdeen was down 4-1 after a goal by the Blizzard's Matt Youso at 5:59 in the second period. The Wings knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Jordan Heller at 19:59 in the third period.

Erik Baskin had a great game for Aberdeen, netting two goals. Baskin scored at 15:10 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Brookings and again while short handed 18:44 into the third to make the score 4-2 Brookings.

The Wings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Aberdeen outdid its season average for goals scored. The Wings have scored at the pace of 2.5 goals per game during the current campaign. With 40 shots on target during the contest, Aberdeen exceeded the 24.0 shots it averages per game this year.

Aberdeen also got a goal from Jake Horton as well. In addition, Aberdeen received assists from Liam McGing and Parizek, who contributed one a piece and Kyle Haak, Peter Krieger, and Jonathan Grebosky, who each chipped in two.

Brookings stifled the Wings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Blizzard put 49 shots on net during the contest, more than the 29.4 they average per game.

Brookings was helped by Eric Brenk, who finished with one goal. Brenk scored 3:46 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Brookings. Jared Docken provided the assist. Brookings also got points from Justin Moody, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Nick DeCenzo also scored for Brookings. Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Jordan Stejskal, Drew Brevig, and Tyler Cayemberg, who contributed one a piece.

Chad Catt made 45 saves for Aberdeen on 49 shots. The Wings incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Blizzard's Drew Weigman stopped 35 shots out of the 39 that he faced. Brookings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
