Smith leads Austin over Bismarck, 8-3

The Austin Bruins' CJ Smith had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing four assists in his team's 8-3 win over the Bismarck Bobcats.

Smith scored 7:20 into the second period to make the score 8-1 Austin. Grant Eichstadt picked up the assist. Smith dished an assist on Chris Fischer's goal that made the score 1-0 Austin at 20 seconds into the first period. He then added assists on John Simonson's goal at 35 seconds into the first, on Josh Bretner's goal at 4:06 into the second, and on Fischer's goal at 5:43 into the second.

Austin's penalty kill excelled, as the Bruins gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Austin forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Bruins had been spending in the box. Austin stifled Bismarck's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bruins' goal total was higher than their season average. Austin averages 3.8 goals per game. The Bruins got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Austin additionally got points from Fischer, who also registered two goals and one assist, Simonson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Riley Colvard, who also had one goal and one assist, and Travis Maxwell, who also finished with one goal and two assists. Austin also got a goal from Nate Mondry as well. In addition, Austin received assists from Nolan Kirley, Drew Anderson, Jake Flynn, Cody Dixon, and Easton Viitala, who contributed one a piece.

The Bobcats' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Bismarck is averaging 2.4 goals against for the season. The Bobcats could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Jason Pawloski made 11 saves before being replaced by Nicholas Lehr, who took the win and made six saves. Austin registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Bruins ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jay Dickman was ejected from the game. Bryan Nies took the loss and made nine saves before being replaced by Aaron Nelson who made 11 saves.
