Springfield boosted by Leon's play in net, beats Soo 7-1

The Springfield Jr. Blues relied on the sparkling performance of Matt Leon in net to grab a 7-1 win against the Soo Eagles.

Springfield was sparked by Tom Cooney, who had one goal. Cooney scored 16:35 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Springfield. Jon Carkeek picked up the assist.

The Jr. Blues stifled Soo's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Springfield's goal total was higher than its season average. The Jr. Blues have scored at the pace of 2.6 goals per game during the current campaign. The 41 shots that Springfield put on net surpassed the Jr. Blues' average of 26.0 shots per game this season.

Springfield also got points from Nate Chasteen, who also had one goal and one assist. Springfield also had goals scored by Ryan Atkinson, who had two and Micah Ranum, Devin Mitchell, and Brett Skibba, who scored one goal each. More assists for Springfield came via Terry Leibo, who had three and Jack Sloan, Theo Tydingco, Mitch Rogge, Mike Severson, Trevor Stone, Parker Johnson, and Davis Dekorte, who each chipped in one.

The Eagles could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Soo puts an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game. The Eagles gave up more goals than its normal season average. Soo averages 2.5 goals allowed per game. By firing 34 shots on goal, the Eagles exceeded the 29.4 shots they average per game this year.

Soo was led by Jared VanWormer, who scored the team's only goal. VanWormer scored 6:00 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Eric Rivard provided the assist.

Leon recorded 33 saves for Springfield. The Jr. Blues incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. The Eagles' starting goalie, Tyler Marble, made 27 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Skoog Paige, who stopped seven shots. Soo incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
