Huge game by Payne boosts Kalamazoo over Janesville, 5-2

Behind a great game by Robbie Payne, who had one goal and three assists, the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings defeated the Janesville Jets, 5-2.

Payne got on the board by slotting home a power play goal 1:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo had gotten the advantage when Janesville's Todd Koritzinsky was sent off for tripping. Kyle Gattelaro provided the assist. Payne dished an assist on Taylor Burden's goal that made the score 2-0 Kalamazoo at 9:03 into the second period. He then added assists on Burden's goal at 12:36 into the second and on Mark Esshaki's goal at 4:02 into the third.

The Jets' 13 penalties came back to haunt them, as Janesville let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

The Jr. K-Wings racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Kalamazoo had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr. K-Wings' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Kalamazoo's offense was clicking better than usual and put 51 shots on goal during the game, better than the 31.6 shots per game it averages.

Kalamazoo additionally got points from Sam Johnson, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Burden, who also racked up two goals and one assist.

The the Jets penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Janesville surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. By firing 24 shots on goal, the Jets exceeded the 21.7 shots they average per game this year.

Janesville was led by Ryan Dau, who tallied one goal. Dau scored on the power play 7:15 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Kalamazoo. The Jets had gained a power play chance when Matt Wurst was whistled for slashing. Pedlan Ruslan assisted on the tally. Janesville also got a goal from Jason Ford as well. In addition, Janesville received assists from Kucerovy, who had one.

Marcus Due-Boje rejected 22 shots on goal for the Jr. K-Wings. Kalamazoo ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brendan Vetter was ejected from the game. Janesville's Austin Priebe stopped 46 shots out of the 50 that he faced. The Jets registered two goals on eight power play opportunities.
