Kenai River vanquishes Fairbanks in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams.

Kenai River saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Brown Bears made the score 2-0 on a goal by Bryan Hodges at 10:34 in the third period. Fairbanks evened things up at 2-2 on a goal by Brett Gervais at 19:09 in the third period.

Kenai River put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Ice Dogs to score on any of their five power plays.

Kenai River also got a goal from Albin Karlsson as well. More assists for Kenai River came via Mikhail Bushinski, Alex Jackstadt, and Brad LeLievre, who contributed one a piece.

Fairbanks put 41 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.1 it averages per game.

The Ice Dogs were helped by Jayson Angus, who grabbed one goal. Angus scored 11:09 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Kenai River. Nick Hinz assisted on the tally. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Ben Campbell and Devin Loe, who each chipped in one.

The Brown Bears' starting goalie, Evan McCarthy, made 12 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Marcus Zelzer, who stopped 27 shots. Kenai River incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Steve Perry made 21 saves for Fairbanks on 23 shots. The Ice Dogs incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
