Bismarck penalty kill dominates in 5-2 defeat of Austin

The Austin Bruins failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Bismarck Bobcats shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2.

Bismarck bested its season scoring average. This season, the Bobcats average 2.9 goals per contest. By firing 47 shots on goal, Bismarck exceeded the 25.1 shots it averages per game this year.

The Bobcats were helped by Matt Anders, who registered one goal and one assist. Anders scored 2:07 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Bismarck. Joe Giordano assisted on the tally. Bismarck additionally got points from Shane Omdahl, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Bismarck also got a goal from Matt Pohlkamp as well. More assists for Bismarck came via Stanislav Dzakhov, who had two and Rory Vesel, Nate Repensky, Ryan Callahan, and Cory Chapman, who each chipped in one.

Austin put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Bismarck to score on any of its eight power plays. The Bobcats were unable to stop the Bruins from sending pucks towards the net, and Austin eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

The Bruins were led by Drew Anderson, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Anderson scored on the power play 6:53 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Bismarck. Austin earned a power play opportunity when Jeremy OKeefe was put in the box for holding. CJ Smith picked up the assist. John Simonson also scored for Austin. In addition, Austin received assists from Jake Flynn and Brandon Wahlin, who contributed one a piece.

Aaron Nelson made 29 saves for Bismarck on 31 shots. The Bobcats incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Jason Pawloski rejected 42 shots on goal for the Bruins. Austin incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
