Brookings wins tough contest against Minot, 4-2

The Brookings Blizzard and the Minot Minotauros were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Brookings made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Brandon Parker's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Blizzard pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 43 penalty minutes.

Brookings was paced by Parker, who finished with one goal and one assist. Parker scored 14:48 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Brookings. Evan Hesse assisted on the tally.

The Blizzard's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. The 45 shots that Brookings put on net surpassed the Blizzard's average of 25.7 shots per game this season.

Brookings also got a goal from Drew Brevig as well. In addition, Brookings received assists from Matt Youso and Eric Brenk, who each chipped in one.

The Minot penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Minotauros had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Minot put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Brookings to score on any of its three power plays. The Minotauros' offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.3 shots per game they average.

Minot was helped by Mason Morelli, who tallied one goal. Morelli scored on the power play 14:43 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Minot. The Minotauros had taken the advantage when the Blizzard's Derek Sand got sent off for roughing. Matt Audette provided the assist. Minot additionally got points from Cameron Rowat, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Minot came via Lucas Oliver and Jake Clifford, who contributed one a piece.

Brookings' Drew Weigman stopped 26 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Tyler Parks made 41 saves for Minot on 44 shots. The Minotauros registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
