Corpus Christi rips Odessa, 6-3

Behind a great game by Nick Monfils, who had two goals, the Corpus Christi IceRays defeated the Odessa Jackalopes, 6-3.

Monfils' tallies came at 6:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and 11:51 into the first to make the score 2-1 Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi's penalty kill excelled, as the IceRays gave up zero goals despite allowing six power plays.

Corpus Christi racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and three majors for 39 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game the IceRays had been spending in the box. Corpus Christi stifled Odessa's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The IceRays outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Corpus Christi averages 3.1 goals per contest. With 38 shots on target during the contest, the IceRays exceeded the 23.5 shots they average per game this year.

Corpus Christi additionally got points from Rudy Sulmonde, who also tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Michael Economos, who also had one goal and one assist. Corpus Christi also got a goal from Eric Purcell as well. More assists for Corpus Christi came via John Roisum, Jalen Schulz, AJ Jarosz, Beau Walker, Andrew Paras, Wayland Williams, and Emil Romig, who each chipped in one.

The the Jackalopes penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled four minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. Odessa had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Penalties took their toll on the Jackalopes, as their penalty kill unit let in two power play goals. The defense for Odessa played an important role offensively, racking up 14 shots on goal. The Jackalopes' offense was clicking better than usual and put 33 shots on goal during the game, better than the 15.0 shots per game they average.

Odessa was helped by Matt Volonnino, who racked up one goal. Volonnino scored 1:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Odessa. Dylan Rosen provided the assist. Brett Wagner also scored for Odessa. In addition, Odessa received assists from Josh Racek, Rif Taff, and Mike Mezzano, who contributed one a piece.

Corpus Christi's Hayden Stewart stopped 30 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Nick Deery made 32 saves for the Jackalopes on 38 shots.
