GAME RECAP

Austin vanquishes Brookings in shootout, 2-1 (3-2 SO)

Riverside    Sat, Feb 02, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Austin Bruins defeated the Brookings Blizzard in a shootout 2-1 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Brookings' shootout goals were scored by Adam Cavalinni and Evan Hesse. Austin also got shootout goals from AJ Reid and Brandon Wahlin.

The Bruins came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Austin trailed 1-0 after a power play goal by the Blizzard's Hesse at 19:48 in the first period. The Bruins knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Reid at 13:19 in the third period.

Brookings was stymied by Austin netminder Nicholas Lehr, who stopped 25 shots during the victory. The solid play of Lehr will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.35.

By firing 40 shots on goal, the Bruins exceeded the 29.7 shots they average per game this year.

More assists for Austin came via Joey Caprio, who had one.

The Blizzard put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Austin to score on any of its five power plays. Brookings relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Hesse, Tyler Cayemberg and Eetu Karvinen took 14 of the team's 26 shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Eric Brenk, who had one.

The Bruins incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Drew Weigman made 38 saves for the Blizzard on 39 shots. Brookings incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
